Shangri-La Plaza waves the flag for proudly Filipino fashion, food, and fun on Independence Day

Embrace everything Filipino as Shangri-La Plaza banners up the three stars and a sun in every corner of the mall in celebration of Independence Day on June 12,  giving a showcase of proudly Filipino expression from fashion, food, to entertainment.

Begin the festivities with homegrown delights and gather the family for a traditional Filipino brunch or lunch. Savor well-loved classics like pancit luglog and bibingka at the better-than-ever Via Mare. Or find innovative takes on local comfort dishes like kare-kare with shiitake mushrooms and tofu or ube champorado at Manam.

After a hearty meal, explore the vibrant world of Filipino art at Galerie Stephanie as it presents the Free Fall exhibit featuring local artists that work with paper. Paulu Bruselas shows his mastery of the delicate use of watercolor; Dan Macapugay creates portraits that center on human experience; and Imam Santoso goes intricate with surrealist illustrations of the environment.

For a wearable kind of art, refresh the wardrobe with ready-to-wear pieces from internationally recognized Filipino fashion designers. Rajo Laurel adds tropical finesse to daily staples with stylish polos for men and floral dresses for women with unique appliqué and tie-dye details from the RAJO SS24 collection. Francis Libiran, who designed the SINAG barong of Team Philippines for the opening ceremonies of the Paris 2024 Olympics, weaves elegance into everyday wear with collections and accessories that feature sleek lines and soft textures.

As the afternoon unfolds, witness the country’s rich dance tradition with a performance by the Philippine Maharlika Dance Artists (PMDA) at the Grand Atrium at 5:30PM. The PMDA is dedicated to promoting and preserving the country’s dance heritage From Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. For its commitment to local performing arts, the troupe has received the Meritorious Performance Award from the National Commission for Culture and Arts-National Committee on Dance.

Bring Filipino pride to the cinema as Shang hosts a special screening of the highly anticipated Disney-Pixar film Inside Out 2, which features Fil-Am actor Liza Lapira as Disgust. Now centering on Riley’s teenage years, the sequel is expected to take audiences on a heartwarming journey of navigating new emotions like Anxiety, Ennui, and Nostalgia. Make sure to capture your feelings (and emotions) at the photobooth in the Red Carpet lobby. Simply show the movie ticket to get photos for free.

Get inspired by Shang and wave the flag on Independence Day with activities that give the spotlight to everything that makes us proud to be Filipino.
